Draft album poster

This is my draft of my album poster. I went with the title of the band in bold in the top right. It stands out with the choice of font and colour. I love the image but i think its on the wrong side. I think it will look better on the right hand side. I have also gone for the star image which was what Andrew Goodwin suggested.i have included the release date of the album and ratings from leading rock magazines. Overall I like the poster but it has to much of a magazine cover feel to it. I may think of looking at a new layout.

Below is some feedback from my class about my poster.

Draft mock up of the video

Analysis of different album poster's

Poster no.1 The Killers - Day and Age
This is the poster for The killers Fourth album. From what is available to see the poster is very limited on information.
The image it self is the front cover of the digi pac. A lot of artisits use the same image from their digi pack  for the poster. This technique does work as it gives the audience a taste of what the album will look like. It also also helps the audience in a way as it gives them the general image of the album so they know what they are looking for when they come to buy the album.

The text is all centered in the middle of the poster in straight lines. This way the text is very easy to read. The font size of the band's name is the biggest of all the other font as it is the band the poster is for so the editor want's the name to stand out and catch the audience's eye. The font also matches the back goriund image. The font of the album is very basic and the same font is used for the rest of the text on the picture. Except the album name is in black where as everything else is in white. This was the album name will stand out from the poster just like the Band's name.

The poster has all the generic codes and conventions such as the record label, web address for the band so the audience can get more access and also some information about the tracks which will be on the album. On the other hand the poster is missing the release date or any information for if it has already been released. This is an important feature for which an album poster should have so the audience know when they can buy it.

Poster no.2 Jessie J- Who You Are

This is a poster for Jessie J's Debut album, Who You Are. This album poster doesn't fall into my genre of music but I thought I could explore all codes and conventions for variety of genre's. Once again like The Killer's poster. The cover image is the front cover image for the digi pack. The image is very striking. The eye contact is looking straight into the camera. This allows for the audience to interact with the image as it feels like the figure is looking out at you.

The colour choice is black, white and gold. All very meaningful colours which you wouldn't associate with the pop genre of music. Gold is normally associated with wealth and the colour is used in the font of the artist's name. This can mean that she is wealthy but it also can imply that she is important. The title of the album is just in below the artist's name, but the font is very thin and white. I feel that it is rather difficult to read.

Below the image there is a black box which has all the relevant information about the the new album. The poster has all the conventions which The Killer's poster has. There is information about the tracks in the album as well as other artist's involved. There is the artist web address for the audience but this one is different to The killers web address as part of the web address is in gold. This is much more eye catching than the one on the Killers poster. The poster also has the record labels in the bottom corners. Finally just like The Killer all the text is in a central column in the middle of the page. By having all the information in the center of the page it makes it easier for the audience to read the text.

Album poster no.3 Green day- American Idiot
This is the poster for Green Day's album American Idiot. This is probably my favourite album poster I have seen as it has just about everything a person would want to see on a poster. The title of the band is in an empty space in the top left corner. This works really well as it isn't blocking any of the image. The font of the band's name is the same as the font on the digipack. This shows continuity through both products, Instead of having the title of the album, instead it is the title of one of the songs which the editor is trying to promote as well. This may be because the image is taken from the music video for the song. This is a good technique as it shows a live performance and this way the audience can feel a sense of exclusivity.

Different to the Jessie J's poster the band member is gazing up the the the sky not making eye contact with the reader. The member has a look in his eyes with the look of mystery and suspicion. On the other hand it could also be that the member had an uplifting of power which made him look upwards instead of looking at the audience during their performance. By doing this the singer will cause the audience to be more persuaded to buy their album or at least consider to buy it. Another thing about this image is that Andrew Goodwin's thoery is correct. Bille Joe Armstrong (lead singer) is the only one from the band in the image. Therefor this may suggest that he is the star image.

Unlike the other album poster's which I have analysed, Green Day uses a higher volume of text. In some cases an increased amount of text could be an overload of information for the audience to take in, but in this case the text is presented a clear format with words such as "free" or "no.1" which is eye catching which will therefor maintain the audience's interest. Just like the other posters i have analysed, Green Day's poster follows the common codes and conventions by having web address's for the artist and the record label, the logo of the record label. It also includes information of the tracks on the album. The use of different colours makes the text easier toread as well making the text stay fresh in the audiences head,. Finally there is an image of the album cover underneath all the text. This gives the audience extra information about what the album will look like.

Anaylsis of different digi packs

Analysis of digi packs
In this slide share i have analysed three different digi packs. Two are from the same genre as the music video and the other digi packs from a completely different genre. I thought it would be useful to analysis more then one as not all digi packs are the same. Even if they are from the same genre. On the other hand similar codes and conventions are used on all three digi packs such as a star image, fonts, bar-code, record label logo's and web addresses for the audience to use.

Feedback for the video so far

I decided to get some video feedback from some of my target audience. Even thought these two people are in my class they are fans of Green Day music. Overall there feedback was very detailed which I was hoping for and it was very effective.

Positives feedback

  • Clear narrative right from the beginning to the end
  • Good use of costume
  • Good use of both make and female gender
  • Band bits are great and well filmed
  • Lighting is incredible
  • good choice of settings
  • Has the conventions of a typical rock video
Negative feedback
  • Need to work on the lip syncing
Social media audience feedback

Here are some pictures of feedback from when I put the music video onto Facebook. Overall it was very positive feedback. The main issue which came up was that some people found the narrative a bit confusing but the result of this that we haven't got all of the footage yet which we should be getting on Friday. Otherwise the feedback was great, now we just need to finish the video where then I will put it up again on Facebook to get some final feedback on the video.

Different types of music videos

Album poster flat plan

Album poster
Just like the digi pack, I have created a flat plan for the album poster.

Contents of the plan
I think that the layout of the plan is very efficient. I intend to have a large image of the main singer and only him. The image will cover the whole page but the figure will be towards the right of the page leaving space in the stop right.

  • In the top left there will be the title of the band in capital lets keeping the same conventions as my digi pack. The font will be the same as well as the colour
  • Below it will be the title of the song title which we are trying to promote.
  • Just below the microphone there will be a text box with all the relevant information about the new single and the new album including: the release date, what is included in the album and images of the album and single so the audience know what they are looking for.
  • In the bottom right corner will be the logo of the record company.
  • In the bottom left there will be a logo of one of the places where the album can be bought.
Overall I am happy with this flat plan and I think that it will be a success with the right image and fonts.

Digi pack flat plan

Digi pack

In order to create my digi pack I will need to plan out what I want it to look like. So in this matter I decided to make a flat plan for my digi pack. This way I was able to get my idea down on paper. I learned how effective creating flat plans during AS so I thought it would be a great way to plan out the digi pack. The negative side of plat plans is that it is sometimes difficult to get all the information over to the recipient.
I have put the flat plan into a prezi.

Starting the ancillary tasks

  1. Digipak
  2. What is a digi pack?
  3. "...a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs..."

Below are different templates for digi packs. As you can see there are different designs for basic albums or there are more complex designs for special additions albums. It all depends on the people who are making the album and what they want. It also depends on who they are targeting and the price they will be charging to buy the album. Obviously the more packaging within the digi pack means more money and materials have gone into creating the digi pack so the cost of the album will go up.
Image result for digipak templates
Here are some examples of digi packs up on the market. Some are related to my genre and some aren't but I will be doing some deconstructions of digi packs.

Album poster
As well as the digi pack. We also have to create a album poster for our music video. The poster will be going in magazines to promote the album for the band. Here are some examples below of magazine advertisements of albums.

Crisis!!!!!!

Mid life editing crisis
We have recently hit a problem with the footage we have gathered. The footage for the intro and the footage for the band were filmed with two different camera's. This ment that the filming settings were different and in result the capture dimensions were different sizes. The first camera we used to film was set to film in 1280x720 whereas when we came to film the band footage  the media department has purchased two new top of the range camera's which were canon t3's. At the time we didn't realize what the setting was set on and we filmed the footage in 1920x1080 which is completely different to the other footage dimensions. This is where we started to panic because we couldn't physically go back and refilm any of the footage due to the lack of time and actors so i decided to research into finding a way how to reduce the size of each frame so they would be the same size and I found this video.
By following this video i was able to resize the scale of each clip of both sets of footage so they would match up to each other. This was very time consuming. I had to change the scale of each clip. The band footage had to be scaled down to 63% whilst the footage in the field had to to be scaled down to 34%.

What I have learned from this
  • I have learned to be me more organised and check the settings before filming to see if the camera is set to the correct setting as it will save a lot of time when coming to edit the footage.
  • Try to use the same camera throughout the whole of the project so that you can ensure the footage will be the same size and also the same quality.

screen shots of editing the intro

Editing the intro
After importing all the footage which we gathered from the first shoot it was time to edit to the storyboard. The first shot is a close up on a piece of corn which is soon followed by a figure walking past. I decided to put in a transformation between two shots to show the character instead of just letting the shots roll . This way the audience need to pay attention to see what i happening more. At first i didnt think it would work but once lowing the down the speed percentage of the shot on video 2. The duration was then spread out for 3 seconds but i lowered the speed duration down to 80%. This had a good result as it fitted well into the flow of the footage and it also gave a bit of extra time for the audience to realise what was going on.

The next few screen shots show the continuity of the shoots as each angle shows the process of the man making his way to the tree. Each shot instantly makes the audience feel that the man is isolated and lonely. This is what we wanted as the way we have edited the shots with continuity editing with different cuts slowly starts to develop the narrative. The shot have been edited so that no shot is on the screen for longer than 3 seconds. As the music hasn't started yet we don't want the shots to be too long as we may loose the interest of the audience.

This screen shot shows the transition I put in to show the transition from the narrative Ollie to  band Ollie. The transition I used was called a cross dissolve which faded one shot into another whilst the the first shot is still on the screen. This helped show the connection between the two different shots. This was a succesull transition and has resulted in positive feedback as well with comments such as "good transition", "shows the connection between the band and the narrative". This is what I was hoping to hear.

Overall so far the editing is a success and there hasn't been any major problems so far.

template for digi pack

Here is the template I will be using for my digipack. As you can see there is for pages of the template so there will be four pages of my digi pack. This template is also very helpful as it has the dimensions for each side. I will be putting the template into Adobe photoshop where i can use it as a stencil and place images and text as a layer on top. This way i can be precise about the size of each page.

Draft digi pack

Here is a draft of my digi pack. I have used the template of the digi pack which I downloaded. I have decided to stick with my idea of each member of the band having their own individual page. As the singer is star image of the band and the narrative I thought to have him on the front of the digi pack. I feel that this was most effective as the audience will be able to see the connection between the digi pack, poster an the music video.

I have included all the generic codes and cconventionsof digi packs such as:
  • Track list (decided to include all the songs of off of the original album which the song has come from)
  • Record label name and logo
  • Spine informdation
  • Title of the album
  • Title of the band
  • Parental adivsory logo
  • Barcode
All the images I have used are screen shots from the filming of the band. I didn't plan too take images whilst filming as it didn't cross my mind which I highly regret but I really wanted images from the live performance so that the audience are able to receive the feel of a live performance across all the products. Also  it wasn't possible to go back to the venue and take the images as the actors weren't available but I do like the screen shots and from audience feedback, the screen shots do work really well.

KINGSMAN VISIT

Our media class went to the cinema to watch a brand new postmodern film. This film was called "Kingsman" and there aren't even any words to describe how good the film was and how beneficial for our course to have a new recent post modern text to refer to in our exam.
