Editing techniques

Editing techniques which can be used within a music video



Cut: This is a transparent visual splice between one scene and another to show movement. Also used to speed up the scenes.


Cross cutting: Cutting back and fourth between different scenes showing that something is happening at the same time.

Continuity editing: Editing technique which makes the flow between different scenes smooth and relaxed. Starts to develop the them of a story.

Fade: This is a visual transition which occurs between two scenes when one scene ends it goes black for a short period of time which then fades into the next scene. Used to show a different period of time or a new setting.

Match cut: This is used to create a strong continuity action between more than one scene as it is also used to speed up time.

Shot reverse shot: Cuts Switching between two characters normally during conversation.
Dissolve: The editor is uses this transition to shows gradual transition between to similar shots.
