Here is music video from a band which has influenced the making of out video alot. The video is for a song called 21 guns br Green Day. As you can expect videos, from the same artist will have a simular style. Such as the video for "wake me up when September ends" which is also done by green day. It has the same feeling to it!
The pace of the video is rather slow. The editing doesn't pick up until the pace of the music speeds up but even then there is a lot of long takes and the editing slows down again when the guitar solo occurs. Therefor Goodwins theory is correct here, "thoughts beat". The speed of the song is represented visually through the camera work which is a common occurrence in punk rock videos.
The band members and characters are all dressed in black clothing with also black make up/ My video will need to include black of I want to stick with the conventions.
Goodwin's theory of a "Star Image" is also correct as the camera does switch between the band quite regularly but it is Billie Joe (the lead vocalist) who the camera does focus on. Its almost trying to advertise him instead of the band.
This does leak into Goodwin's next of "narrative and performance". This music video does try to advertise the band but since the band are already well known, they don't need to advertise themselves that much which is why there is a much stronger narrative to the video.
Genre- This is a video taking from the genre I intend to make my video within. The artists' own videos have influenced me a lot as in my opinion, they are one of the top flight of punk rock bands out there. The video follows all of the codes and conventions of the genre.
Representation- The video is representing the band as a whole. The camera is focused entirely on the band as well as the narrative. But they aren't been represented in a bad way. They aren't being violent, there aren't screaming, they are just following the music.
Audience-The video is aimed at the fans and primary audience of Green Day, as they will be the ones to check out the video as it is for a new song. But as I said with Goodwin's theory, the band might be trying to advertise themselves to a wider audience as the video is very meaningfull and from what we can see from the narrative. It's about love, and love attracts a wide audience.
Narrative- The narrative tends to link in with the music. The title of the song is "21 guns". The first thing we see is a bullet, then guns start being fired and bullet holes appear. Smashing objects appearing like they have been shot. Also the narrative does link into the pace of the music.
Media language- The video its self uses, camera work, editing, sound but only non diegetic sound, no diegetic sound is used and Mise-en-scene.
