A mood board

Music video mood board
I have put together a collage of pictures which i took from screen shots of different music to try and get an image of what the main features are for different music videos and artists. I gathered images from Miley cyrus to Green Day. Two completely different genres but they have one thing in common. They both have a star image which relates back to Andrew Goodwin's theory of genre.

IN pop or RnB videos which I looked at always have either attractive females (almost nude) and attractive males. This encourages the "the male gaze". This is common feature which the producer of pop videos

I managed to get a lot of pictures of close ups on the artists in the video. This helps from the artists but also let the audience know who is the focus of the video or if it is a band they the camera will be focusing on the band or the main vocalist

In rock videos which a lot of the images i gathered are mainly from rock videos involve the sense of live music as the audience get to see clips of the band playing the music along with the narrative of the video. Sometimes the whole video is of the band playing their music but over the years we have started to see the use of plot or storyline to link in with the lyrics of the song. Sometimes their is no link between the narrative and the lyrics.

Music video according to Andrew Goodwin

This is the video for Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day. Billie Joe has written this song for his Dad who unfortunately passed away a few months before the production of the video.

Goodwin believed that the key to a successful music video was through these 5 aspects:
  1. Through beats, seeing sound .
  2. Narrative and performance.
  3. The star image.
  4. Relations between visuals and sounds.
  5. Technical aspects of the video
